As I read that young men are commenting “your body, my choice” on women’s social media, and hear anecdotally that some boys have been saying it to girls in American schools, it’s time I rolled up my sleeves.

And finished that kid’s book that teaches consent.

I didn’t see the show. Only the clip that went viral. And I don’t know what happened afterwards.

Her comment stopped everyone in their tracks. Silenced the panel and the host.

But I think it went viral because it highlights the lived experience of women and girls every day. The high alert awareness we have when walking alone.

And that even the good guys don’t know how that must feel and forget it’s a thing.

This is not a post against Paul Mescal.

But rather to ask why do you think this went viral. And has it shone a light on VAWG and how much work is still needed to make women and girls safe.

Wanna be in my Reels?

I was looking through a photo album on my phone recently and I had some photos, that people had sent to me when my first book came out.

It was back in 2017 and She’s Not Good for a Girl, She’s Just Good! was my first book baby. And some parents sent me some lovely images of them and their babies reading it!

And I couldn’t help but wonder… So! In exchange for a set of books, would you be happy to shoot some B Roll footage of bedtime stories, or some images of reading my books together with you tiny humans?

What would you say?

If you had the chance to go back and talk to your younger self?

I would say the same thing that I say to Thea all the time: you have a voice and you can use it.

All too often little girls are seen and not heard. Just sit and look pretty, don’t ruin your dress.

And we grow up and become women who are talked over in meetings. Don’t be emotional. Don’t get angry. Stay in your lane.

If I could go back and tell my younger self it’s okay to be emotional and angry; it means we’re human, feeling all of our emotions. And that sometimes, we can go drive in another lane. And that we have a voice, and we can use it.

Today is International Day of the Girl Child.

And taking inspiration from @inspiringgirlsint and their #thislittlegirlisme campaign, I’m posting this to remind myself of what I would say if I could go back in time.

Today on #internationaldayofthegirl take a moment and think about what you would have said to your younger self. And hold your girls tightly. And say it to them.
