A recent survey by the NASUWT union found most teachers identified social media as “the number one cause” of pupil misbehaviour, with female staff bearing the brunt. A primary school teacher said: “I have had boys refuse to speak to me, and speak to a male teaching assistant instead, because I am a woman and they follow Andrew Tate and think he is amazing with all his cars and women and how women should be treated. These were 10-year-olds.” 10 year olds. These aren’t 20 something men. These are little boys. Our little boys. Your little boy. Social media itself isn’t the problem. Instagram is a wonderful, powerful tool that gives a voice to people and businesses to market themselves. For free! Just the time it takes to make content. But the men on social media teaching other men and boys, what it means to be a man by degrading women, that’s the problem. And please don’t come at me with freedom of speech comments. Freedom to speak doesn’t mean freedom from consequences. And the consequence is this douche who thinks it’s appropriate to dm me and say things like this. I’m 52 and have been through menopause and breast cancer; I have no fucks left to give. But how would this make your daughter feel? How would this make your mum feel? Your best friend? We need to teach boys before the Tates and Trumps of the world do. So they don’t grow up to harass their female teachers, or send creepy messages to women they don’t know on the internet. Let me know what you think.⁠ ⁠ Many of us woul Let me know what you think.⁠ ⁠ Many of us wouldn't have a problem with a boy playing with a doll.⁠ ⁠ But I've been in toy shops and watched a child pick up a doll (or other toys that have traditionally been thought of as for girls), and heard the adult with them (both male and female) say, put that back that's for girls. ⁠ ⁠ I once heard an older man say, that's not for you; what are you a girl?!⁠ ⁠ What does that say to a child? How does that make them feel about their choices? Their likes and dislikes?⁠ ⁠ Because it's a common human response, when told you shouldn't do something or like something, to feel at worst shame, and at best, confusion about what you can and can't like and why.⁠ ⁠ So what do you think? Authors of Instagram?! Who can relate?! I have be Authors of Instagram?! Who can relate?! I have been writing book 4 forever. Not like, every single day! I’m not a sit down and write every day kind of writer! But book 4 will tackle the subject of consent. And I think somewhere along the way I told myself this was SO important that I’ve sort of scared myself. What if I get it wrong. What if it’s no good. Bloody hell putting something creative into the world is terrifying!! 🙈 But I still want to do it. I just wish it could be done as quickly as a Reel!! 😂 Anyhoo I’ll get there. That was also when I met @hannahbflf the powerhouse founder of Big Fish! I thought she was amazing and we ended up working together for about a year. Little did I know then that 11 years later I’d be the author of 3 children’s books, with one in pipeline, and that Hannah would invite me to do an author reading at one of the raves! And not just any rave but the midsummer daydream rave at @hornimanmuseumgardens which I live near to! And not only that, but it was during a visit to the Horniman butterfly house, that I witnessed an event, that inspired me to write How Frank Helped Hank! The Horniman is actually featured in the book! So of course that’s the book I’m reading on Saturday! At 3pm, 4pm and 5pm. If you have kids under the age of 8 come along and say hi.
