Calling all teachers! ☎️

At this time of year I really like to give away books to early years teachers, key stage 1 and key stage 2 teachers.

Books make wonderful gifts ANY time of the year but if you’re a teacher with 30 in your class it can be hard deciding what to get for all of those wonderfully inquisitive minds! So let’s keep them reading over the summer hols!

There’s no catch here! The books are completely free. I will just ask you to pay postage.

Well that escalated quickly!

I shared a post about Book 4 and why I’d been struggling to write it for the past five years. I wasn’t expecting the response!

In fact it floored me!

The number of people who said:

“I’d pre-order”
“I’d support this”
“My children need this book”

was genuinely overwhelming! 😭

So I’ve done something slightly terrifying and created a Founding Readers page on the website for Book 4: The Boundary Book.

I couldn’t write it. I thought the block was ‘I do

I couldn’t write it. I thought the block was ‘I don’t know how to write a story about consent’ but the block is ‘I’m carrying adult anger into a children’s book’

There’s not a week that goes by where I don’t read something in the news that makes my blood boil. Misogyny, vawg, it feels like society is going backwards.

And I was looking backwards from adulthood, trying to work out how to write about consent in rhyme, while kids are looking forwards, not yet adults.

I’m thinking about coercion and fear, kids are thinking, don’t take my toy. It’s the same lesson! It’s just a bit different for a child.

I’ve realised book 4 isn’t about stopping r*pists. No one can write a kids book about that! That burden is too large for one rhyming picture book! But book 4 could help children to understand boundaries.

Perhaps book 4 is about: what’s the first lesson about boundaries that I wish every child learned before they ever got access to the internet.

I think I can write about that.

And as I said in the slides above: if you know any VAs who are killer experts at Ingram Spark or KDP please tag them. The tech is alluding me and I need help!

Also: thoughts on whether people would pre order. But like, with a 6 month wait… Is there an appetite for a book like this?

The whole reason @theachopsbooks exists is my daug

The whole reason @theachopsbooks exists is my daughter, Thea.

13 years ago I searched for books to read to her, and sought out the fairytales I had read as a child. But reading them in 2013, with adult eyes, I was horrified at the pink passive princesses, and princes who climbed through windows and kissed without seeking consent.

So I started writing and @theachopsbooks was born. 📚

13 years on, honestly, it feels like the world is going backwards. I was writing to try and help create greater equality for my daughter and yours, and for your boys in the face of toxic masculinity.

And yet today I read that a large percentage of Gen Z men think feminism has “gone too far” and women should obey men.

My heart breaks reading this. Are we going backwards? What does the future hold for our children? Will our girls be safe? Will our boys be influenced by men who promote misogyny as masculinity?

I made this Reel as I thought the audio was too funny as a parent of a now teenager. So I do want to celebrate in this post that my little Thea Chops, the one who inspired it all, is now 13. She is smart, and funny, and knows her own mind, and is not afraid to tell me! And I cannot wait to see the young women she will become. If this world is heading backwards I will stand beside her as she marches forwards.

She was due on the 8th March, which as we all know is #internationalwomensday but she arrived one day early, on the 7th. I like to think it’s because she just couldn’t wait to take this world by storm! 💪🏽

They say when women support women amazing things can happen, but here is exactly the same happening when men support men.

It’s the very reason I wrote How Frank Helped Hank; to teach kids, but especially little boys that it’s okay to cry and feel sad!

Can not not tell you how happy I was when @chattyman won #celebritytraitors and seeing this beautiful display of masculinity was just the icing on the cake! 🎂
